Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Screw Conveyor

Find answers to the most common questions asked by our clients.

Screw conveyors handle dry to semi-fluid bulk materials: Powders: Cement, fly ash, lime, gypsum, flour, sugar, salt, plastic pellets, pharmaceutical powders. Granular: Grain, rice, coffee beans, fertilizer, crushed stone, sand, coal. Semi-fluid: Sludge, wet biomass, manure (requires special considerations). Not suitable for: Large lumpy materials (>50% screw diameter), very sticky/tacky materials (adheres to screw), highly abrasive materials requiring excessive wear protection, materials sensitive to degradation from screw action (easily crushed products). Temperature range: Standard: -20 to +80°C. High-temp versions up to 400°C for hot ash, clinker. Material moisture: Best below 15% moisture content; above 20% materials become sticky requiring special screws.
Step 1: Required capacity. Determine tons/hour or m³/hour needed. Step 2: Material characteristics. Bulk density (kg/m³), particle size, flowability, abrasiveness, temperature. Step 3: Calculate screw diameter. Use capacity charts based on material type and screw RPM. Example: 6-inch screw at 60 RPM moving grain = ~4-6 tons/hr. 12-inch screw = 25-35 tons/hr. Step 4: Select pitch and type. Standard pitch (1× diameter) for most materials, half-pitch for inclines >10°, variable pitch for difficult feeding. Step 5: Length and power. Longer conveyors require more power exponentially - practical length limit ~40-60 feet for economic screw drive. Inclined conveyors significantly reduce capacity (20° incline loses ~50% capacity). Provide material specs for accurate sizing.
